Maasai Mara King Dies-Scarface

The world mourns Scarface – Kenya’s oldest Lion in Maasai Mara

On Friday the 11th of June 2021 at 1pm, The most Famous wild Lion on Our Planet earth took his last breath. The iconic legend Scarface took his last breath today after several hours of lying motionless. Scarface earned his nickname through an injury in 2012 when he lost his right eyelid while taking over a territory with his three brothers Hunter, Sikio, and Morani. They won the territorial fight and took over the ‚‘‘Marsh Pride‘‘ females after defeating the lesser males which they killed or sent packing

Scarface even had a dedicated Facebook page to himself. For wildlife photographers who believe in bucket lists, having seen Scarface alone can put quite a few precious sightings in the shade. With his unruly, windswept mane that had a big patch of black hair suggesting greater virility and an abiding status among his peers, a distinctly deafening roar, and an unmistakable swagger that does remind one of the other Scarface, played by a rambunctious Al Pacino in the Brian de Palma film.

In social media posts on Saturday, conservationists said, Scarface died peacefully on Friday afternoon. “At 1 pm local time, Scarface took his last breath. He died in peace without any disturbance from vehicles and hyenas. We were the only vehicle on the scene and by his side, hoping to give him any kind of comfort,” read the post in MPCP Facebook page. He will never be forgotten for all the sighting he has given guests

Scar’s virility is legendary and coupled with his rugged good looks—a black widow’s peak and a mane that sweeps back from his forehead like a villain in a Disney flick—he embodies every bit the “King of the Jungle.” Scar has always been a celebrity and icon in the Mara. To see him in real life is considered a “thing.” In Kenya’s Masai Mara, when travelers on safari compare notes there’s one defining factor, those who’ve seen Scar and those who have not. Photographers from around the world quake with delight at the sight of him.

Scar along with his brothers ruled for several years and were challenged repeatedly but all the challengers falling short, the legends have defended their territory and prides with all their might for eight years which is quite an accomplishment as well as siring countless youngsters with the Rekero Pride & Breakaways, Paradise Pride, Marsh Pride, Currently the Lookout Pride and so on. Scarface’s legacy runs in their veins as they now carry his legacy. The big question now remains, with Scar gone; how does Morani do alone as a single pride male?

Lions generally live for 10-14 years, and despite suffering quite a few injuries that also led to him developing a few limps, Scarface was known as a strong lion. His endurance and distinct, ‘scarred’ visage lent a charisma and sense of intrigue to his cult—so much so that it led to widespread documentation and coverage of his life and times. The wound on his eye opened several times but timely vet intervention prevented infection. Scarface was also struck by a Maasai warrior’s spear, in an act of self-defense by the latter, who was protecting his cattle.

Scarface will never be forgotten for what he has done for the Mara but instead remembered forever as a legend, an icon and one of the greatest of all time

RIP Scarface 2007-2021
